It all starts with a sewing machine — my grandmother's, then my mother's — and an old family cushion that I took apart to reclaim its fabric and foam. Out of that material came an alphabet: cushion letters with no sharp corners, puffed up with fleece, designed as volumes you'd want to hold against you.
Three shapes sewn from the cushion — the bar, the arc and the circle — form the alphabet's vocabulary, complete with their sewing pattern. A typeface that doesn't try to be authoritative but welcoming, with a hint of melancholy: childhood objects an adult would have kept, as witnesses of the past.
The brief called for an object, not a file, made by hand. So the specimen takes the form of an accordion-fold leaflet: on the front, the manifesto, the machine, the fabric, the cushion and the foam; on the back, the full alphabet. The covers are printed on the cushion's own fabric — “Héritage” on one side, “Molleton” on the other.
